Mirka Kulich
"It is the will of God and Nature that these mortal bodies be laid aside, when the soul is to enter into real life; 'tis rather an embrio state, a preparation for living; a man is not completely born until he be dead: Why then should we grieve that a new child is born among the immortals?" - Benjamin Franklin, 22 February 1756
The above photograph is of my friend Martins mother Mirka captured when I visited the Czech republic back in the fall of 2004. The sun was hanging low in the sky and evening was quickly approaching as she and her daughter finished off peeling another barrel of chestnuts while my sister and I visited. Their home was a small two story log cabin built just below the tree line of the Jesenik mountains and over looking the fields that led to the main road. This picture I posted last year was taken from the bedroom window of the cabin as her husband Karl was putting some of the finishing touches on the roof.
Mirka Kulich passed away on May 6th at 19:00 GMT from liver failure due to the cancer that she had fought for 14 years. She is survived by her husband Karl, her two sons Martin and George and her daughter Paula...

Mike (ex scientia)
Please accept my sympathies. That was a very nice tribute, Paul.

May Martin derive comfort from this touching tribute.
Photos always seem to take on added importance when the subject passes on; they remain the only tangible connections to a past now lost.

Thanks Carmi and Mike.
And I completely agree with you, photographs freeze in time that which is always fleeting from our grasp.
cheers,
P.
