Makeshift Sleeping Car

"If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I've been on two types of train cars in the Czech Republic. The international trains that feel like luxury yachts silently slipping along metal tracks until you forget that you're even moving and then the old probably Soviet era boxcars that make you fear for your life. This photograph was taken on the latter of the two and was made difficult by the constant shifting, jarring and bouncing of the car on what one would have mistaken for a straight track.

I tried three shots, tweaking ISO for low noise and shutter speed to eliminate any motion blur before my subject woke up and put an end to my entertainment on what ended up being a long train ride home .

My brother lives in Vienna and doesn't have a car. He travels mainly by train to the different opera houses for performances. When we visited, it was our main mode as well. I think I've experienced both types. The scariest was the high speed train between Florence and Rome... we met another on going the opposite direction and passed in a dark tunnel... that was a shut your eyes, hold the ears experience.

*Hopes you're never around when she travels on a train* I'm always falling asleep on the train!

Good shot though :)

I've never been on a train, I think I'd opt for the international luxury train if it was in my budget. I'm sure I'd be a nervous wreck on the Soviet boxcar.

That's a great shot! How funny to think that she has no idea we're all looking at her sleeping. :-)

Here from Michele this time.
I love the European train system.
Wish we had it here. What a way to see the countryside.
