Grandma Moravec, Moravec, 1980's, Grandmother, Photographs of family

Remembering...

"The gallantry and aggressive fighting spirit of the Russian soldiers command the American army's admiration" - George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff, U.S. Army

I feel as if a slice of history has passed me by when I hear my mom talk about her mother. My grandmother passed on over twenty years ago while the burden of Communist rule and the Berlin wall stood strong against the forces of capitalism and democracy. She slipped away to be with God while her world was locked in a struggle for freedom, and with her slipped away the countless decades of history that no book ever recorded. With today being Remembrance Day I felt it fitting to remember a woman who lost a husband and several years to the Russian front. She fed the cold soldiers of the Red Army stood defiant in the face of German troops and somehow made it out with 7 kids...

This photograph was captured by my dear sister Stanya in 1981. Her last day in the Czech republic before she and her husband at the time fled to Austria...

She reminds me of some of the relatives of my aunt's husband; strong women who have seen more of life in a month than most of us do in a lifetime.

Michele sent me tonight, but I am here often.

what a fitting tribute, and i love the picture. although we were on this side of the wall, i too think of my family on armistice day. our family has lost many sons to wars in many lands. from Kuwait my brother came safely home, however in Vietnam my uncle gave his life, in Hitlers Germany my great-uncle gave his left leg. In Japan my grandfathers blood ran, but he still came home. Even in the Kaiser's Germany our family shed blood and lives. I am proud to have a history of men who fought for freedom, adn women who stood by them. on this day we bow our heads to all those who gave thier lives, adn all thier families left behind.

Yeah, thanks to her unshakable belief in God and in the power of prayer she and her kids survived; thanks to the above mentioned some of us - her offsprings are where we are... in relationship with the same Father. Leaves no doubt in me about the power of prayer, only a question how many prayers were said just for me.....
I took this picture one spring day
(24 springs ago)while visitng her.
As I remember I didn't actually plan to take photos of her that day - it just happened - and those are the last pictures I took of her before we fled our country. (She was 81 at the time and her usual question was:"Who would be interested in a picture of such old woman?")
Thanks, bro!

Great thoughts and wonderful photo. I love how our Veteran's Day is called Remembrance Day in other parts of the world. It's a really nice concept.

Thanks for the update Sister dear. I didn't know you had taken that photograph of Grandma. I still remember her "green noodle" soup (aka chive soup) that I loved as a kid. From what mom shares, well, Grandma put up with a lot and makes the rest of us look kinda whiney with our problems. Kenju put it best up there in the first comment though.

cheers

P.

P.S. Corrected the information on the photo :)

What a beautiful package of words to wrap around a stunning image. History truly does shape us and our world...she is absolute evidence of that.

Thanks for sharing this, Paul.

Paul you and Kenju are wise in your observations. Your Grandmother and those like her stand in contrast to the army of whiners we hear today. What wonderful role models this great women serve as for all of us !!!! Nice job.

Although the photograph captures the lines and creases of a life with many hardships, her face has that peaceful glow that can only come from faith. Beautiful picture by your sister, beautiful grandmother, beautiful life, beautiful words.
