Ontario, Canada - Part of the Bruce Trail

Smokey Hollow Waterdown

How sweet to move at summer's eve
By Clyde's meandering stream,
When Sol in joy is seen to leave
The earth with crimson beam;
When islands that wandered far
Above his sea couch lie,
And here and there some gem-like star
Re-opes its sparkling eye.
-Andrew Park

Located along Mill Street between Union Street to the north and Mountain Brow Road to the south (Google map), this 4 km stretch of single track hiking trail is one of the best ones I've explored yet. The waterfall right at the start of the hike used to operate the watermill which is how the city of Waterdown received its name sake. However there are no traces of an old watermill to be found.

The journey snakes you down on a consistent grade towards the city of Hamilton as you leave the top of the escarpment behind for about two kilometers, then the ground finally seems to level off as it meanders beside the creek bed. I didn't get a chance to explore the level area and see if there were any additional side trails along the route. I know further down off of Snake Rd there are mountain biking trails and there should be a way that these two connect.
