raindrops adorn the head of a poppy flower, Macro photography, close-up photography, close up photography

Catching Rain Drops

"That we find a crystal or a poppy beautiful means that we are less alone, that we are more deeply inserted into existence than the course of a single life would lead us to believe. " - John Berger

At our new home we have discovered a small growth of what I believe to be poppy plants. They are still young and their green heads covered in soft fibers still hang down low. Celebrating the small break in the rain I headed out to capture the droplets of water that get caught between the fine bristles. I positioned the shot against the backdrop of the forest behind us to get a nice dark background and used my own body to create even more shade. The shot required a tripod to get a sufficient DOF.

We do have a problem however; the chipmunks are skilled at getting at the heads of the poppy plant. Every day there is a new stem that has been chewed clean through and if you look around the garden you will find the pinkish remnants of what was in the green bulb. If anyone has any idea on how keep these little opium addicted (kidding) rodents away it would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea about the chipmunks. But if the flowers never open, I don't think there would be any seeds yet. If the chipmunks would wait they might get more of a buzz later on. I thought chipmunks liked nuts.

Love the picture though.

Thank you for stopping by. SRP, I personaly think our chipmunks ARE nuts. They wait in the backyard and look at you in that titlted head sort of way and almost asking "where is my snack buddy, yer late". Brave little rodents.

cheers,

P.

Well, If you don't mind, usually putting a little bit of ammonia on anything will get an animal away from it. Works very well with racoons going through your garbage.

A beautiful macro shot! Your site is very inspiring for all aspiring photographers. I also use a Nikon D70s and have a smaller pocket size Sony to carry when the Nikon is a little too large. I have learned that there are times I wished I had a camera while the bigger unit was home. With the Sony, the results may not be as good but I have a few sunsets that are not bad but would not exist if I only used the Nikon. In the old film days I owned a small Nikon SP for the same reasons, in case I didn't have room to carry the bigger "F" SLR.
