Power plant as shot from a bride in Providence, Rhode Island.

Burning Time in Providence

"God didn't have time to make a nobody, only a somebody.I believe that each of us has God-given talents within us waiting to be brought to fruition." - Mary Kay Ash

We drove into Providence RI as the sun was setting. We had a plan of wandering the downtown core until we found some place to eat; when all we found were closed office buildings piercing the dusky sky cut into grids of concrete pillars by one way streets that remained abandoned.

I saw this building as we crossed one of the many bridges from one side of downtown to the other and pulled a U-turn by careening the wrong way down a one way street to get back to a shooting position.

I think it's a coal burning power plant. Either way the shot required me to shoot setting the camera to bulb and counting off the seconds. One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi and so on till I hit fifty. High tech approach I tell you, and nothing like a mangy guy with long hair mumbling to himself on stretch of bridge at night.

I love how the ground-level lights function almost as punctuation marks in counterpoint to the softer glow coming from the windows, and from the slight reflections off the brickwork itself.

Great, great shot...and one that any photographer would understand if he/she came across you muttering the seconds on that bridge.

How cool that you recognized the artistry in the midst of your travelling and searching.

I long for the day I can have a real digital camera with the ability to set times and such. Wonderful picture.
