Datsun 510 Part One

The Datsun 510 (from 1968 to 1973) has often been called the poor-man's BMW, and many people believe that the 510's design was inspired by old 70's BMWs (particularly the BMW 2002) with their round lights and box-shaped bodies. However, this idea is unfounded - the Datsun 510 was released a year before the BMW 2002. The comparison is further fueled by the little Japanese powerhouses' dominance over the BMW 2002 in the Trans-Am 2.5 L series of the 70's. - Wikipedia

It takes a car enthusiast to really appreciate a boxy car like the Datsun 510. Having the rare chance to take a spin in one was exhilarating enough but the fact that this one was a race ready rally car was icing on the cake. With over 300hp at the rear wheels this green comet demanded attention and respect and could easily overcome even a seasoned driver. With out realizing it you'd find yourself crossing over the speed limit of the single lane highways up here before you had even shifted into 3rd and that car still had a whole lotta' go to give...

Wikipedia is both 'right' and 'wrong' --

While the 510 predates the BMW 2002, it does NOT predate the BMW 1600-2, the 2-door car upon which the 2002 was built.

The 1600-2 was built on the chassis and mechanicals (including the M10 sohc engine) of the 1500 4-door, which began production in 1961.

Pete Brock's BRE (factory backed)Datsuns kicked everyone's backside in the '70s TransAm Series, including the Alfa of Horst Kwech. Factory sponsored "win on Sunday - sell on Monday" campaigns, is credited, in part, for the demise of the series in 1974.

I bought datsun 510 in 1968,probably the first datsun in the region.saw it in the dealer's showroom, paid the enormous sum of 1800.00dollars+tax.the only option was an am fm radio.i enjoyed driving this"compact car" for 8 years, what sold me, after reading a road test in CAR=DRIVER, was the tech specs:OHC,IRS,disc brakes front, the appearance of rust behind the front panels convinced me to sell this great auto.
